A german shepherd is one of the most common dog breeds in the world. Dogs are domesticated carnivores of the family Canidae and are direct descendants of the wolves. They vary widely in shape, size and color and can be trained to perform many roles for human beings such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, military purposes and even helping disabled people.
Due to their long co-existence with human beings, dogs learned to thrive on starch-rich diets. This does not imply that dogs can feed on anything a human can eat. Some foods may be very toxic or even deadly to dogs. The answer to our question “can German shepherds drink lemonade?” Is simply NO. Lemonade is basically lemon juice plus sugar.
Dogs need neither in their system. Sugar leads to weight increase in dogs which can lead to other health problems. Excess citric and sugar also cause committing and diarrhoea to the dog. You should completely avoid grapes and raisins in your dog’s meal. These can cause kidney damage and failure.
There are lots of healthy fruits your dog can eat, for example, apples (remove the seeds), bananas and strawberries. These fruits are less acidic and have nutritional value for the dog too. It’s important to feed fruit as a treat and in moderation. How much fruit a dog can eat depends on the size of your dog and his/her nutritional needs. Treats should make up not more than 10% of his total calories for a day. This means a few pieces are enough.
Giving beer or wine to your dog is very dangerous. Both ethanol, the intoxicating agent in beer, and hops, used in beer brewing, can cause alcohol intoxication to dogs. Alcohol consumption by dogs can cause nervous system disorientation, severe stomach upsets, restlessness, severe panting, muscle tremors and even seizures. In excess, beer and wine are deadly to dogs. There are dog beers and wines which you could go for which are non alcoholic and safe for dog consumption.
Chocolate contains theobromine which in small amounts could cause mild stomach upset, diarrhoea and vomitting. Large mounts of theobromine is very dangerous to dogs. It can cause muscle tremors and seizures, internal bleeding, irregular heartbeat and even heart attack. Too much chocolate consumption by your dog may cause coma and death.
Onions and garlic, whether cooked, raw, or dehydrated are poisonous. They kill off the red blood cells causing anaemia. Ensure your dog does not sneak into your garden where he can scarf down these vegetables. Some people believe garlic is good for your dog but it is not.
Avocados could be the fruit you least expected on the don’t feed list. Avocados contain the compound persin which even in small amounts can make your dog vomit or diarrhoea. The avocado seed is another risk. It can get stuck in your dog’s intestines and stomach when swallowed. Avoid giving raw eggs, meat or fish to your dog. These are not necessarily harmful but can cause food poisoning to the dog.
There are very many healthy foods that you can give your dog. Avoid harmful substances that may put the health of your pet at risk. Always ensure your dog eats a complete balanced diet every day.
